Holly Lawford-Smith

Political philosopher and author

Holly Lawford-Smith is Associate Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Melbourne and the author of Gender-Critical Feminism (Oxford University Press, 2022). One of the few academic philosophers willing to defend gender-critical feminism publicly, she came to Beyond Gender to lay out the intellectual case with precision and without polemic.

Holly Lawford-Smith is Associate Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Melbourne, where her research spans feminist theory, collective action, and political ethics. She is the author of Gender-Critical Feminism (Oxford University Press, 2022), a landmark work that brings rigorous analytic philosophy to bear on questions about sex, gender, and the category of woman — territory that much of academia has been reluctant to enter.

In episode #10, The Philosopher Who REJECTS Gender Identity, she sits down with Stella O'Malley, Mia Hughes, and Dr Bret Alderman to do something rare in the current climate: slow the debate down. Rather than trading slogans, she maps the intellectual terrain — what social construction actually means, how sex and gender are distinct concepts, and why the word 'woman' has become one of the most fiercely contested terms in academic life. It is a conversation that rewards careful listening.

Lawford-Smith is among a small number of academic philosophers willing to defend gender-critical feminism in print and in public. Her work challenges the claim that gender identity should replace or supersede biological sex as the basis for legal and social categories, arguing that clarity about what women are is essential to feminist politics. She has also run the project No Conflict They Said, crowdsourcing and documenting real-world cases where gender identity policies have come into tension with women's sex-based rights and spaces.

What makes her Beyond Gender appearance distinctive is the register: no polemic, no point-scoring. Lawford-Smith treats the hosts and the audience as people capable of following a sustained philosophical argument — and the result is one of the most intellectually substantive conversations the podcast has produced.
