Psychotherapist and Thoughtful Therapists member

Lucy Beney is a UK-based psychotherapist who has chosen to speak in her own name about what she and colleagues are encountering inside Britain's mental health profession. On Beyond Gender she brought clinical precision and unusual candour to a conversation most therapists are still having only in private.

Lucy Beney is a psychotherapist and a member of Thoughtful Therapists, a network of UK mental health professionals who have gone public with concerns about the influence of gender ideology on clinical practice. In a profession where speaking out carries real professional and social risk, she has been among the practitioners willing to do so regardless.

She joined Stella O'Malley, Mia Hughes, and Dr Bret Alderman for episode 47, The Therapists Breaking Ranks on Gender Ideology | Thoughtful Therapists, alongside fellow therapist Terry Patterson. Together they examined what ideological capture looks like from inside a clinical setting — not as a theoretical controversy but as a daily reality shaping how practitioners are trained, supervised, and expected to speak about the people in their care.

A central thread in her conversation with the Beyond Gender hosts was the function of policy language in the profession: guidance that sounds neutral but works, in practice, to narrow what a therapist may legitimately say, question, or explore in a session. Beney addressed this with the specificity that comes from working at the coal-face, describing how vague professional frameworks can be turned against ordinary, ethically grounded clinical work.

Her decision to speak on record — in her own name, as an actively practising therapist — is itself part of the story the episode tells. It is a vivid illustration of what courage looks like inside a profession still finding its way through an ideological moment it was largely unprepared for.
